Intercom System

An Intercom System for all purposes

Intercom Systems: Wireless or Wired? ImageIf you are considering installing an intercom system but have not yet decided which way to go, I just thought I would put together a brief overview of the pros and cons of wireless vs wired. Many people still think that an intercom should be wired for security reasons, or that wireless id less dependable. Neither of these worries are substantially founded. Let me just go over the main details here and I can follow up with some more detail later.

The two main advantages of a wireless intercom system over a wired intercom system are that, firstly, a wireless intercom is far simpler to install and, secondly, a wireless system is intrinsically more versatile for its users. When it comes to installation, the consideration of wires, where they will go and where to situate devices is a big one. But a wireless system takes the pressure off that initial planning stage and allows you to adapt over time, if that is important for you. In fact, if you are looking for a system which will take no time atall to set up and you want something to use almost right away, then some wirelss systems practically work straight out of the box in minutes.

As for security, there are always going to be potential risks when using wireless signals, although probably less risk than most people realise, if only they took the necessary precautions. Some systems do dislay problems with interference  from devices such as cordless telephones, other wireless networks and remote speakers, or even electric motors. If unsecured, others may be able to listen in to your system if you do not properly secure it.

In these respects, a wired system is far more stable. Minimal opportunities for interference of any kind and little chance of being overheard. Although choosing the right system and one with the best features can rule out any of these problems. Also available are the Power Line Carrier units which communicate over your home‘s electrical wiring and this is also known as a wireless intercom, although it makes use of wiring already present on the property.
